Places to visit in Agra
Agra, being one of the city that served various kings as a capital city, has got some of the beautiful monuments. Here are some of them which one must visit while being here.
1. Taj Mahal:
Agra is famous tourist spot because of this beauty, Taj Mahal. Visiting Taj Mahal usually leaves people mesmerized every time they see it. It has very intricate architecture with fine carvings which makes it captivating. It is often referred to as epitome of love as it was built by Shah Jahan for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. His beloved is known to rest under the dome of the monument. The monument is placed in the south bank of Yamuna River and has verses of Quran inscribed on the entire structure embedded with precious stones. Another fact that makes Taj Mahal a masterpiece is its symmetry, as it looks same from all the four sides. People from all over the world come and visit this place. This place is known for its tourist attraction as it is one among the Seven Wonders of the World.
2. Fatepur Sikri:
Fatepur Sikri is a walled city which was built by Emperor Akbar, in the outskirts of Agra. He ruled there for quite a long time until one day he had to move out as the water was short in that area. Fateh in Persian means “victory” and the monument reflects the heroism and the artistic work of Emperor Akbar. It is made of red sand stone and has 52 steps that direct towards a 175 ft high arch with detailed inscriptions.
It is about 37 km away from Agra and is a must for people who are touring to Agra as it is still as marvelous as it was back then. There are many buildings constructed in the Sikri which take us back to the old times.
3. Agra Fort:
It is another piece of architecture which was built by Mughal Emperor Akbar. He employed 4000 workers to build it in 8 years. Like the Red Fort of Delhi, it is also made of red sand stone and was place where the entire court would seat. There are many structures in Agra Fort that can leave you all mesmerized. Some of them are:
- Sheesh Mahal
- Jahangir’s Palace
- Moti Mahal
- Khas Mahal
The fort as a whole has four gates out of which one was used by the King and the other three by the public. The entire tomb takes about 2 hours to explore and must be in the visiting list of places in Agra.
4. Jama Masjid:
It is a mosque built by Mughal King Shahjahan in the year 1648 and in was dedicated to his daughter Jahanara Begum. The beautiful mosque is made of sandstone and surrounded by blue walls. It has 35 steps to enter into.
5. Chini Ka Rauza:
It is a great work of architecture in the memory of Allama Afzal Khan Mullah, who was a Prime Minister of the court and also a famous poet. The mosque is also famous for its glazed tiles work.
